Middle school vocal music goals

This year, I want to see tremendous growth in the middle school vocal music students. In order to accomplish this, students will be expected to participate appropriately in each class session as part of their grade. Participation is the key to growth, and it will help students mature, develop community, and give them discipline that they can take with them for life.

Students will be singing a variety of musical styles, such as patriotic, pop, jazz, folk, and more classically oriented songs. These songs will teach them the basics of musical expression, singing in unison and in parts, elements of different styles and genres of music, and the theory behind basic pop song writing. I hope that students will feel confident to write songs of their own by the end of the school year with the theory they learn.

Another important element of any music class is listening. Students will listen to a variety of genres of music throughout the year, and they will learn about the timbres (sound quality) of different instruments and vocal ranges. Dynamics and other key parts of musical expression will also be discovered throughout our listening labs.

Another goal of mine is  for students to perform at a variety of events. I have some field trips in mind, such as singing at retirement homes or in the park, and some school events, such as continuation, winter, and spring concerts, as venues for our performances. I have confidence that if students come to class willing to learn and if they participate with good attitudes, these goals will be achieved.

Students will be graded as follows:
Participation points: 10 points per class for an approximate total of 150 points per semester
In class assignments/homework: 15 points each, given weekly ~ 150 points
Performace Attendance: 50 points each concert ~ 150 points
Effort and improvement: 10 points per class ~ 150 points
Standards to be met by each student:

  • Musical expression
  • Musical creation
  • Aesthetic valuation of music
  • Theory of music
  • Performance of music
