Bathroom Breaks and Other Class Procedures (syllabus appendix)

Bathroom Breaks:
Mrs. Pino understands that restroom emergencies happen, so students will be allowed to go to the bathroom only 4 times each quarter during class before it affects their participation grade (if you’re regularly missing class, it’s hard to participate). Only 1 student may be out of the class at any given time. Students will be expected to return within 3 minutes after they leave the classroom to use the restroom. If for some reason the particular emergency requires more time, let me know in advance.

In order to cut down on class disruptions, to ask for permission to use the restroom, all you have to do is lift your student planner, already filled out. I will give you a head nod if you can go at that time. If I need you to wait a minute, I’ll signal for you to hold on with my hand. Lift your planner again in a few minutes to receive permission to go. If you lose your planner, you will not be allowed to go to the restroom. Per school policy, no one is allowed in the halls in the first and last 15 minutes of class.

Pencils:
Every student should be equipped with two pencils every class period. There will be a pencil jar for emergencies, but it is best if every student come prepared to class with their own pencils. Please, no pens in class!  If you make mistakes writing in notes in pencil, it will be easy to change. Also, when working with sheet music, we can erase markings before returning it so the next person has clean music.

Materials: Every class period, please bring your instrumentmusic books and sheet music, pencils, and keep a few pieces of binder paper in your music folder so that you can take notes if necessary in class. Keep in mind that all music that is not personally purchased by you is the property of East High or Mrs. Pino, and it should be returned in good condition when it is no longer needed for class. If music is not returned after use, it will be billed to your student account.

Tests: In order to help Mrs. Pino help you in your learning, she will have routine assessments/tests. Every other Block Day, students will be asked to prepare specific songs/pieces or scales for performance. Sometimes students will get to choose between a range of songs, and other times, they will be given precise examples to play. Please make sure you are prepared to play these by yourself, with a friend, and/or as an instrument section. You will also be asked to self-evaluate and evaluate your peers on their performances using a rubric.

During Class:
Throughout class, students will be given opportunities to ask questions about the music and to participate in class discussions. Students will be expected to raise their hand and wait to be called on if they have a relevant question. Students are asked to refrain from making rude comments as this hinders the learning environment and classroom safety. Phones may only be used for instructional purposes only. If you are on your phone for any other reason, you will get warning before I take your phone for the remainder of class. If this happens regularly, I will turn your phone into the Dean’s Office per school policy.
