Vocab for Beginning Band


  • Round/Canon - a song where more than one group of musicians plays with layered entrances.
  • 1st/2nd ending - a shorthand way to repeat a section of music with an alternate ending.
  • one measure repeat signs - shorthand for repeating one measure %
  • accidentals - naturals, sharps, flats in a piece that are not in the key signature # b
  • accent - attack the note louder >
  • dynamics - volume in music, forte(loud), piano (quiet, soft), mp (medium soft), mf (medium loud
  • multiple measures of rest - a thick, black bar with a number written above that tells you how many measures to count of rest before continuing to play
  • Harmony - more than one note playing at the same time to produce a complementing sound.
  • Melody - a single line of music, the tune you can sing
  • Counter Melody - another line of music that complements the main line; it should be in the background with the other harmonies.
  • Major Scale - WWHWWWH - whole steps and half steps; in ascending order and descending order
  • arpeggio - broken chord (skip instead of step)
  • chord - more than one note played at the same time; triad - 1,3,5
