A spiritual is a song from the era of slavery. The lyrics are often written in metaphors that express their desire for freedom. The metaphors are based on Biblical stories that talk about going to heaven, crossing the river Jordan, or finding the Promised Land. Each of these symbols is rooted in the desire for freedom.
Remember to study the following as well:
Write the names of the strings (high to low) on the tablature below the staff. ___/4
e___
B___
G___
D___
A___
E___
Study how to read all the notes in your book from page 9-23. Know that tab is a picture of where your fingers press the strings.
What is the difference between rhythm and beat? Explain in complete sentences.
"Rhythm uses varying lengths of notes--some notes are short, while others are long. Examples of rhythms are half notes, quarter notes, and whole notes. Beat, however, is a constant pulse. You can find what the beat is by looking at the meter/time signature at the beginning of music. If it says 4/4, the beat will be a quarter note."

- In every major and minor triad, you have 3 parts: the root (1), 3rd (3), and 5th (5). On your quiz, you will be asked to build chords in root position, which means from low to high, in order. One (1) is the lowest note in the chord; three (3) is the middle note of the chord; and five (5) is the top/high note of the chord.
- DEF#GABC#D is a D major scale. You know this because it starts on the note "D" and follows the interval pattern of whole whole half whole whole whole half (wwhwwwh)
